A Lamellar Water System, also known as a Lamella Clarifier or Lamella Separator, is an advanced method used for water and wastewater treatment. It is designed to remove suspended solids from liquids, making it highly effective in clarifying water. Here's how it works:
How a Lamellar Water System Works
- Influent Introduction
The process begins with the introduction of influent (wastewater or water containing suspended solids) into the system. This influent enters the clarifier at the bottom or side of the unit, where it is evenly distributed.
- Flow Through Lamella Plates
The influent then flows upward through a series of inclined lamella plates. These plates are closely spaced and set at an angle, creating multiple narrow channels for the water to pass through. The design increases the surface area available for sedimentation without requiring a large footprint.
- Sedimentation
As the water flows through the lamella plates, the suspended solids begin to settle out of the water due to gravity. The inclined nature of the plates allows the solids to settle on the surfaces of the plates and slide down to the bottom of the unit.
- Sludge Collection
The settled solids, now referred to as sludge, collect at the bottom of the lamellar clarifier. This sludge is periodically removed from the system for disposal or further treatment.
- Effluent Discharge
The clarified water, now free of most suspended solids, continues to flow upward and overflows into a collection trough or weir at the top of the unit. This clarified effluent is then discharged from the system, ready for further treatment or reuse.
